‘The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug’ Movie Quotes
Thorin Oakenshield: If this is to end in fire, then we will all burn together!
Smaug: I am fire… I am death.
[Looking at two pictures in a locket that he has confiscated from Gloin. The picture on the left has a long thick beard]
Legolas: Who’s this? Your brother?
Gloin: That’s my wife!
[Looking at the infant in the other picture]
Legolas: And who’s the other one?
Gloin: That’s my wee lad, Gimli!
Kili: Aren’t you going to search me? I could have anything down my trousers.
Tauriel: Or nothing.
Bilbo Baggins: Truly, the tales and songs fall utterly short of your enormity, O Smaug the Stupendous!
Smaug: Do you believe that flattery will keep you alive?
Smaug: Well, thief! I smell you, I hear your breath, I feel your air. Where are you?
[moves in Bilbo's direction]
Smaug: Where are you?
[Bilbo runs, but Smaug hears his footsteps across the gold and follows]
Smaug: Come now, don’t be shy… step into the light.
Dori: Was that an earthquake?
Balin: That, my lad, was a dragon.
Bilbo Baggins: I… found something in the Goblin’s tunnels.
Gandalf: What did you FIND?
Bilbo Baggins: My courage.
Gandalf: Good! You’ll need it.
Bilbo Baggins: I did not come to steal from you, O Smaug the Unassessably Wealthy. I merely wanted to gaze upon your magnificence, to see if you were as great as the old tales say. I did not believe them.
Smaug: [strikes a pose] And do you, NOW?
Bilbo Baggins: Truly songs and tales fall utterly short of your enormity, O Smaug the Stupendous…
Smaug: Do you think flattery will keep you alive?
Bilbo Baggins: No, no…
Smaug: No, indeed!
[observes the carving that held the Arkenstone]
Bilbo Baggins: What’s that?
Thorin Oakenshield: That, Master Burglar, is why you are here.
Smaug: There is something about you. Something you carry, something made of gold… but far more PRECIOUS…
[Bilbo is assaulted by Sauron's eye and pulls off the ring]
Smaug: [sees him] There you are, Thief in the Shadows!
Smaug: I don’t know if it has occurred to you, but even if you could steal the gold bit by bit – a matter of a hundred years or so – you could not get it very far. Not much use on the mountainside, or the forest? Had you never thought of the catch? A fourteenth share or so, was that the terms? But what about delivery, cartage, armed guards and tolls?
Bilbo Baggins: I tell you… gold was only an afterthought with us. We came over hill and under hill, by wind and wave, for revenge. Surely you realize your success has made you some bitter enemies?
Smaug: [laughs] Revenge? The King Under the Mountain is dead, where are his kin that dare seek revenge? Girion Lord of Dale is dead, and I have eaten his people like a wolf amongst sheep, where are his sons’ sons that dare approach me? I kill where I wish and none dare resist! I laid low the warriors of old and their like is not in the world today – then I was but young and tender, now I am old and strong! My armor is shields, my teeth swords, my tail a thunderbolt!
Bard the Bowman: You have no right to enter that mountain!
Thorin Oakenshield: I have the ONLY right!
Bilbo Baggins: Well, I really must not detain Your Excellency any longer, or keep you from a much-needed rest. Ponies take some catching, I believe, after a long start. And so do burglars!
Smaug: You have nice manners for a thief… and a LIAR!
Radagast the Brown: What if it’s a trap?
Gandalf: It’s undoubtedly a trap.
Bilbo Baggins: You don’t know everything, O Smaug the Mighty, not gold alone brought us…
Smaug: You admit the “us”… why not say “us fourteen” and be done with it, Mr Lucky Number?
Smaug: [Bilbo and Smaug looking at the Arkenstone] I am almost tempted to let you take it. Just so you can see it corrupt his mind; corrupt his heart.
Bard the Bowman: Dragonfire and ruin, that is what you’ll bring upon us! He cannot not see beyond his own desire!
Balin: It never ceases to amaze me, the courage of Hobbits…
Bard the Bowman: If you awaken that beast, you’ll destroy us all!
Tauriel: When did we allow evil to become stronger than us?
Legolas: It is not our fight…
Tauriel: It IS our fight!
Bilbo Baggins: I have always understood that dragons were softer underneath, especially in the region of the chest… but doubtless, someone so fortified has thought of that…
Smaug: Your information is antiquated! My armor is iron. No blade can pierce me!
Bilbo Baggins: I might have guessed it, truly there can be nowhere found the equal of Lord Smaug the Impenetrable. What magnificence to possess a waistcoat of fine diamonds!
Smaug: Yes, it is rare and wonderful indeed!
Smaug: Look! What do you say to that?
Bilbo Baggins: [spots a bare patch] Dazzlingly marvelous! Flawless! Perfect! Staggering!
Tauriel: Lie still.
Kili: You cannot be her. She is far away. She… she is far, far away from me. She walks in starlight in another world. It was just a dream. Do you think she could have loved me?
Smaug: Let me tell you, I ate six ponies last night and I shall catch and eat the others before long. In return for the excellent meal I shall give you one piece of advice for your good: don’t have more to do with dwarves than you can help!
Bilbo Baggins: Dwarves?
Smaug: I know the smell and taste of dwarves, no one better! Don’t tell me that I can eat a dwarf-ridden pony and not know it! You’ll come to a bad end if you go with such friends, Thief Barrel-Rider! I suppose they are skulking outside, and your job is to do all the dangerous work and get what you can when I’m not looking? For them? And you will get a fair share? Don’t you believe it! If you get off alive, you’ll be lucky!
Thorin Oakenshield: I will not risk this quest for the life of one burglar.
Balin: His name is Bilbo!
Smaug: I am King Under the Mountain!
Legolas: There is no King Under the Mountain, nor will there ever be!
Thranduil: Where does your journey end? You seek that which would bestow upon you the right to rule. A quest to reclaim a homeland, and slay a dragon!
Smaug: You seem familiar with my name, but I don’t seem to remember smelling you before. Who are you and where do you come from, may I ask?
Bilbo Baggins: You may indeed! I come from under the hill, and under the hill and over the hill my paths lead – and through the air! I am he that walks unseen!
Smaug: So I can well believe, but that is hardly your usual name.
Bilbo Baggins: I am the Clue-Finder, the Web-cutter, the Stinging Fly. I was chosen for the lucky number.
Smaug: Lovely titles, but lucky numbers don’t always come off!
Bilbo Baggins: I am He that buries his friends alive and drowns them and draws them alive again from the water. I come from the End of a Bag, but no bag went over me!
Smaug: Those don’t sound so creditable…
Bilbo Baggins: I am the friend of Bears and the guest of Eagles! I am Ring-Winner and Luck-Wearer, and I am Barrel-Rider!
Smaug: That’s better! But don’t let your imagination run away with you!
Legolas: Do not think I won’t kill you dwarf!
Gandalf: They are in danger!
Radagast the Brown: The world is in grave danger!
Thranduil: Such is the nature of evil, in time all foul things come forth!
Bilbo Baggins: What have we done?
